Streaking.org is a site dedicated to the promotion of streakers and streaking. Luckily, it comes with a disclaimer asserting the absence of sexually explicit pictures on the website.
The website is obviously intended to benefit users as a forum to share their streaking exploits and post pictures and videos that aim for humor. Links lead visitors to a discussion board boasting posts of streaking stories and descriptions, along with the occasional picture or video. There is also a connection to a yahoo group along with a social network that has apparently been taken offline.
Streaking.org promotes streaking as non-sexual act, something to do for fun or rebellion. Personally, I can see why people would want to avoid it, but it does not make sense to me for streaking to be illegal. People who streak do so for the shock factor. At my high school, a group of streakers ran across the football field in order to protest the strict rules in place (such as a ban on water bottles). Unfortunately, the rules became even more encompassing after that, but the statement remained.
At the same time, streaking can be damaging if done in front of young children and others who might be disturbed by the image. If plagued by poor timing, it could cause accidents and inadvertent death.
Even with those cons, I do not see streaking as deviant enough to warrant harsh punishment. Perhaps it should be discouraged. But perhaps the threat of being caught adds to the fun. In the end, streaking is a humorous form of expression…just one that has the potential of being unpleasant for witnesses.
Streaking is a deviance, a website about streaking is really funny though. Yes it is illegal, but sometimes it is hilarious. At other times, it is completely terrible though. Like you said, especially around children or with "poor timing". Depending on the cirumstance, streaking will be viewed as funny or simply wrong.
ReplyDeleteWith streaking the quad being on alot of JMU students list of things to do before graduating I feel that it is an issue that should be talked about. I see streaking as a deviant behavior because organizations like the FCC do what they can to cover up nudity in media. But I also feel that streaking happens because it is considered a deviant activity
ReplyDeleteStreaking I also see as deviant, but at the same time is it really all that bad? Yes, in the presence of little kids/children it is highly frowned upon. The same goes with bad timing as mentioned above. However, in certain situations I don't see it as really being deviant. For the most part it is people just trying to have a good time and be a type of rebel. Streaking can definitely go both ways though, and its funny they have a website devoted to it.
ReplyDeleteClassic college deviant behavior! On a college campus streaking really isn't a very big deal because it has become somewhat of a normal activity. At many places (including JMU) it is tradition to streak.
ReplyDeleteStreaking the streets of, say, Harrisonburg becomes a totally different level of deviance based on the fact that it is done less frequently and has no basis of tradition. It also may expose nudity to a more unaccepting demographic.
Yes, agree with Mike. On a campus, it is hilarious. On the streets of New York City, the police will likely arrest you. Also, there are some sports streakers that are habitually arrested when they run across the field naked.
